Choosing the Right Keywords For Search Engine Optimization

Keyword optimization involves researching, analyzing and selecting the right keywords that will lead to high search engine rankings and also give a nice website traffic increase.

Before you start collecting content for your website you need to do a keyword research. This is the most important step before building your website and should not be skipped. The most vital part for any search engine optimization campaign, is to target keywords that are both feasible and produce satisfactory results. One of the top reasons SEO campaigns fail is because people are targeting the wrong keywords.

When you are searching for your keywords do not start off by optimizing for the keywords with the higher global monthly search volume. If a keyword is searched very many times, then the competition you will have to outrank will be extremely fierce because many sites are competing for that keyword. It's always better to begin your website optimization with less competitive keywords. Get some traffic with those keywords, and later on, when you have created more authority you will be able to focus and rank for keywords with more competition.

A simple tip when searching for keywords is the following:
if the top websites for a specific keyword have a Google Page Rank higher than 4, it's not wise to target that keyword until you build some authority and momentum.

To do your keyword research you can search for a free online keyword research and analysis tool. My SEO tool arsenal includes the following free tools:

  • AdWords Keyword Tool : Generates potential keywords for your campaign and reports their Google statistics
  • DigitalPoint's Keyword Tool: Displays results from both Wordtracker and Overture
  • Wordpot: Another keyword finder tool

After you find the right keywords for your on-page SEO, you can try senSEO. It's an addon for Mozilla Firefox that inspects the most considerable on-page search engine optimization criteria. Then it calculates a grade of how good the current website's page implements the rules.

Finally it provides complete guidelines on how to optimize your content. Another idea is to use the above tool to inspect what your competition is doing right and learn from that. You can use senSEO every time you create a new post or page, and you can stay current on SEO Google Trends.
